I needed a study that was simple but engaging for both Christians and non-Christians. My husband is in a nursing home and I needed material I could share with them without requiring me to build it all since I’m already so busy. This was absolutely an answer to prayer. Thank you! The other beautiful thing is each study is fine as a stand alone in case someone missed a study day. Amazingly we are set to discuss the crucifixion and resurrection right as we celebrate Easter! Great resource.
I recently ran a bible study for a few ladies from our local toddler group, two of whom had never been to a bible study before. The studies are well thought through and the questions encouraged lots of good conversation.
Each passage focussed in some way on forgiveness, which was very helpful when discussing the difference between faith in Christ for the forgiveness of sins and the common perception that being a christian simply means that we lead a moral life.
I would definitely use this study again! Highly recommended.
I have been using this study book with a group of international ladies who are wanting to know more about Jesus. Each bible study is well laid out, with additional information for those who are not bible literate. It is extremely good at bringing out the main points in each bible passage, and points people to Christ and who he is. The only negative I would say about the book, is that sometimes the English is quite academic, and difficult to understand. I find myself having to use simpler language. I recognise, however, that the books are not designed to be used by people that don't have English as their first language, so it may not be an issue with fluent English speakers. All-in-all, a very good study book for those who are wanting to know more about Jesus, and the Christian faith.
This is a welcome reprint of the excellent UCCF Uncover Luke material (now out of print) but in a less studenty format. It is clearly presented and easier to read than the sometimes tiny print of the UCCF version which is fine for young student eyes but not so good for older people! My only quibble is that the design is unimaginative and not very attractive especially as it is designed to be used evangelistically. However, the material, written by Becky Manley Pippert is excellent and highly recommended for seeker Bible study material. I have found that it works well in groups or one to one.
This book is a small book – only 64 pages – but there is a LOT packed into those pages.
Uncovering the Life of Jesus, written by Rebecca Manley Pippert (http://www.beckypippert.com/) walks us through six encounters with Jesus from the Gospel of Luke. Most Christians will find those stories familiar, but trust me, everyone can learn something new.
Each chapter starts with the historical setting and background of the text. (I found this helpful and interesting!) The author provides Bible verses (using NIV) and then a series of questions designed to get us to look at the story from differently and to see other aspects of the story. For example, in the story about the prodigal son from Luke 15, she asks:
“In this culture, for any Middle-Eastern man to run would be seen as shocking, humiliating and dishonoring, especially for a man of such dignity. Why do you suppose the father ran so urgently when he saw his son about to enter the village? How do you account for the fact that the father was watching just when the son arrived?”
And lastly, each chapter ends with a chance to consider what this story means and why it should matter to us. It helps to personalize the story and the lesson learned.
I recommend this book whether you use it personally to dig deeper or use in a Bible study group.
