Judges For You

Matt Smethurst, The Gospel Coalition, 28 Aug 2013

If you're looking to feel warm and cozy, I wouldn't recommend the Book of Judges. It's a bleak story—a 21-chapter downward spiral featuring deception, oppression, idolatry, murder, gang rape, and apostasy, just to name a few sins. And contrary to what you may recall from that old Sunday school felt board, even its “heroes”—think, say, Gideon and Samson—aren't exactly heroes.

The second in a series of expository guides based on the teaching of Tim Keller, Judges for You: For Reading, For Feeding, For Leading (Good Book Company) seeks to help preachers and laypersons alike understand and apply the message of this pivotal book. (There's an accompanying six-lesson Bible study guide for groups and individuals, also based on Keller's teaching, titled Judges: The Flawed and the Flawless.)... continue reading

“Helped me to apply the message of Judges to my own life”

This book was so helpful in applying the message of Judges to my life in a fresh way. On initial reading, the book of Judges is difficult to apply and understand. "Judges for you" helped me to see the accounts of the Judges within the context of the themes of the book. Time and again Keller prompted me to consider the idols within my own life as well as to see God's faithfulness, both to the wayward Israelites and to the wayward me. I looked forward to reading both Judges and Keller's commentary in the morning, as knew I would be both challenged and comforted from God's word. I recommend this book as a devotional or as an aid to teaching God's word

“An excellent primer and good book to get a bible study or sermon going”

(Review written for '2 Samuel For You (ebook)')

Tim Chester is always a solid expositor of the word and this book doesn't fail to live up to that. I have been preaching through the life of David had have found myself quoting from this more than any other commentary - simply because at a popular level, it carries its big ideas lightly and makes it very accessible. But don't think that means its light on content. The questions raised at the end of each section give much for reflection as does the content which is well communicated and at times movingly fresh with a gospel emphasis which doesn't distort the text but points to the one greater than David. As with 1 Sam & Revelation for you, this takes what many take whole chapters to say and condenses it into readily accessible everyday language. This book is like one of those small bottles of concentrated washing liquid in which a little goes a long way. Great read, great book, highly recommend.

“Highly recommended!”

(Review written for 'Judges For You')

This is a really excellent book and highly recommended as a way of better understanding what the book of Judges is about in a very accessible way.

Many of us might know some of the stories from the time of the Judges (e.g. Gideon, Samson) from days in Sunday School. However this book shows that there is much much more to learn which is so helpful for Christians today - for example, God's sovereignty and persistent grace towards his undeserving and wayward people and how to live in idolatrous times. The author also takes every effort to ensure that we see how the judges foreshadowed the coming of the ultimate judge and our saviour, Jesus Christ - and being pointed to Him is always great spiritual food!

The book is broken down into manageable chunks which can be used to accompany daily readings and each section ends with helpful questions for further thought and reflection. This is the first "For You" title from GBC that I've read and the experience has made me want to try some more.

May the Lord bless you as much as He has me as you're helped to better understand His word through this book!

“Easy to understand and challenging”

(Review written for 'Judges For You')

I have read the Bible for more than 50 years but there have always been passages which are hard to fully understand. This book has given me new insight on the book of Judges. I loved it and am so glad I came across it. I am grateful to Tim Keller for drawing such a clear picture, in language I could understand. I was challenged to confront my own short-comings and sometimes misguided attitudes. I liked the subtle differences in interpretation which gave me a great understanding of God's over-all plan. They were obvious, once pointed out, but I'd never really thought about them before. I found the 'Issue of Holy War' at the back of the book most informative. I used the book as part of my daily devotion and I was eager to pick it up each time. I would have no hesitation in recommending this book to anyone wanting in-depth teaching and my appetite has been whetted sufficiently enough for me to order another study. Thank you Tim. Every blessing .

“excellent”

(Review written for 'Judges For You')

Vintage Keller.
really helpful for studying through Judges, and thinking through our own hearts before God.
As you'd expect, there's the repeated theme of God's grace, and how we can ignore that in various ways (religiously as well as 'rebelliously')

“for us today”

(Review written for 'Judges For You')

We are the people who "did what was right in their own eyes". And Judges gives you the rest of the story of what happened to Israel and what we see today in our society when God is forgotten. Tim Keller can't write a bad book!

“Always with clarity and a deep, inspired thoughtfulness”

(Review written for 'Judges For You')

Judges is a difficult book to read partially because of the tough realities it communicates. But Keller does a wonderful job of translating the challenges and culture of those times in ways that connect them to what we face today as God's children. Read this book, reread Judges, and you will receive God's message in a deeply personal way.
