“Simple and Kid-Friendly”

This picture book retells the biblical story of the Battle of Jericho in a way that is faithful to the source material, while greatly simplifying the plot for a very young audience. Tim Thornborough writes in a kid-friendly style, with lots of short sentences, simple vocabulary, and some counting elements. The colorful illustrations from Jennifer Davison are eye-catching and full of energy, and they will engage kids individually and in group contexts. Because the illustrations are so vivid and high-contrast, this will work well in a church classroom setting where a teacher is holding this up for a whole group of kids to see.

The text has a great, punchy rhythm that is easy to read aloud with expression, and unlike some other books in the same series, this one also includes interactive elements to act out. Kids can march along in a rhythm, can count how many times the Israelites marched around the city walls, and can join in with some excited exclamations. This is very engaging, and the book emphasizes the message that God is always with us, and always keeps His promises.

"Joshua and the Very Strong City" will appeal to fans of this series, and to people who are interested in Bible story books written for toddlers and preschoolers at a very basic level. However, even though this book is kid-friendly, the story it represents is complex and raises tough questions, and I wish that this had included an author's note for parents and educators to provide more information from the Bible and possible perspectives for how to discuss the story's complexity with kids who are ready for that. Nonetheless, this is a solid, appealing book that will work well for the target audience.

“Engaging, Interactive, and a Great Book for Kids”

This is such an adorable book. I’m always on the hunt for new books for my kids, and loved this one. The hands on experience elevates it that much more.

It’s a wonderful retelling of Joshua. Walking through the story of his battle with Jericho, it was just great! I love finding biblical stories, and this was a great one to help introduce Bible stories.

I also loved the incorporation of actions through! It’s a fun hands on experience.

Overall, a great book for kids. I’m looking forward to reading this one with my own little.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book, received from The Good Book Company. However, all thoughts and views reflected are strictly my own opinions.

“Fun and interactive story experience for littles!”

We're so excited to receive this new book from the Very Best Bible Stories series. It's been a while since we last read from this series (we've collected almost all of them), and I have forgotten how much we've enjoyed them! This new Joshua and the Very Strong City story is no exception. The illustrations are bold and colourful, we get to interact with the story (tramping and stamping along, shouting and blowing trumpets!) - what a fun way to engage young kids with the wondrous things God has done! All my kids (2-7 year olds) enjoyed, and I especially love how in this series we always get to praise God in a song / loud chant at the very end - in this book "God is always with us. RAAAAH!" We'll be reading this over and over again, and this will be a faithful and fun resource to use at Kids Church / Playgroup!

“Fun story especially for little ones who struggle to sit still while reading”

What a fun book for little kids! Especially those who have a tough time sitting still during stories. This book has them up on their feet ready to act out the marching and trumpet sounds throughout the book. It’s so much fun for little ones to imitate a story while hearing rich Bible truths. Add this one to your collection - you won’t be sorry!

“Great Read Aloud for Sunday School”

The book catches your attention in expecting the reader to grab their trumpet and get ready to march, tramp, trampety, tramp, tramp... This is so perfect for a group of preschoolers and then it explains the truth from the Word of God. The directions to march, then wait, then follow God's orders and march but not blow their trumpets until day 7 .... The descriptive wording, illustrations, and the entire book create a phenomenal experience for the listener, leaving a lasting impression! Thankful to get a copy to review. I'll be using this regularly!

“Interactive and engaging!”

I love this account of the battle of Jericho! The story brings the children along with an interactive component which makes this story extra engaging! In addition to learning an important Bible story, our kids will learn from reading this that nothing is impossible for God!

“Excellent interactive book for tiniest theologians!”

This fun picture book encourages little readers to "stamp, stampety, stamp, stamp" and be at the ready to blow their trumpets.

The text is theologically sound and the illustrations are bright and colorful. My favorite part is the nod to Rahab, her part of the wall stands tall marked with a scarlet cord. God always keeps His promises! If you are looking for an interactive series for young kids, this is a great one to check out. Recommended for ages 2-4.

“Helpful for Introducing Little Ones to the Bible”

I received Joshua and the Very Strong City compliments of The Good Book Company in exchange for my honest review.

Joshua and the Very Strong City is the latest title in the Very Best Bible Stories series by The Good Book Company. It teaches little ones the account of Joshua 6 in which Jericho was delivered to Joshua and the Israelites. This was a means of God fulfilling His covenant to bring His people to the Promised Land.

Joshua and the Very Strong City contains captivating illustrations. It helps children see how this story fits in with the overall story of Scripture and teaches them that God is always with us because of Jesus. This is a fun read for young children and a great way to introduce them to biblical events.

“We loved it!”

Joshua and the Very Strong City is a delightful and faith-filled retelling of the story of Jericho that captures the attention of young readers while pointing them to God’s faithfulness. The vibrant illustrations and simple yet impactful storytelling make this book a perfect addition to family devotion time or Sunday school lessons.

I especially appreciated how the story emphasizes trusting in God even when things seem impossible—a message that is as relevant for children as it is for adults. It’s engaging, biblically grounded, and easy for little ones to understand, all while keeping Christ at the center of the narrative.

If you’re looking for a fun and meaningful way to teach kids about God’s power and promises, this book is a must-have!
